Jil Sander launched her first collection in 1973 in Hamburg and quickly became known for her distinctive minimalist designs for a new generation of professional women. She started her boutique in Hamburg in 1978 and went on to found a collection based on licensing in the fragrance, eyewear and jewelry businesses. In 1999, Prada Group bought the company an amidst an on-again, off-again relationship, Jil Sander left the company in 2005. Raf Simons, a noted Belgian designer, is now the creative director of Jil Sander and has maintained the original aesthetic and design direction. In 2011, the company was bought by Tokyo-based Onward Holdings. Celebrity following includes; Ashley Olsen, Ellen DeGeneres, Uma Thurman and Sharon Stone.
