Founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856 at the age of 21 years, Burberry was originally founded on its line of outerwear. In 1901, the Burberry Equestrian Knight Logo was developed and the Latin word "Prorsum", meaning forwards, was added. Burberry was commissioned by the British War Office in 1914 to develop a coat for use in war conditions and the "Trench" coat was born. Burberry as a company has gained worldwide recognition as a mass market brand that has upheld and maintained the status of its luxury lines. Christopher Bailey was made Chief Creative Officer in 2009 after having spent nearly a decade at the brand.
