While incredibly rewarding, being a mom is one of the most challenging things in a woman’s life. From pregnancy to college funds, you are responsible for guiding a small human into adulthood. That is stressful!!! We’re talking about another human being, and you are responsible! RELAX; you were born for this. With a little guidance from an old pro or two, lots of love and patience, and consistency, You’ve got this! Here are just a few tips to assist you in your journey.
Ditch the guilt, and don’t try to be perfect
Trying to be perfect will only set you up for failure. Life is imperfect and malleable, just as you are imperfect and malleable. When you add a child to the mix, life becomes even more messy and unpredictable. You should have a goal to do the very best you can and be the very best mother and person you can be every day of your journey. Leave it at that, and ditch the guilt. Getting hung up on some mistake you made with your child will only put you in low spirits, and make room for more negativity. It’s a horrible waste of your time and energy.
Don’t sweat the small stuff
Children are a minute by minute responsibility, and they’re messy! You should prepare yourself to know that your house will never be as clean as it was before you had a baby, and don’t sweat the small stuff. If there are a few toys scattered about, don’t waste your energy being frazzled about it. There are precious moments to be spent with your little one. If you only get laundry done once weekly, it’s okay.
Play dates are your best friend
Getting out of the house is such a vital part of your sanity as a mother. Let that child play! Interaction with other children is healthy for your child’s social and physical development. It’s healthy for your nerves too! Letting the kids run and play and wear themselves out means that you get some peace and quiet when the sun goes down.
Use humor to combat the bad days
Being a mother can distract you from the joy of the simple things in life. Don’t let yourself get too wrapped up in trying to make everything awesome, and just learn to laugh. Crack jokes about yourself, and play with your baby! Kids are amazing comedians. Play in the rain, and jump in water puddles! Enjoy being a kid with your kid.
Be their mom, not their friend
When you’re responsible for the upbringing of a child, you need to set limits. Giving your child a voice isn’t a bad thing, but they need to know what is appropriate and what is not. Kids do not need you to be their friend, they need you to guide them through the world and teach them how to grow and thrive.
